After two years of waiting, Gmail's plug-in for voice and video chat is finally available for Linux users. "Voice and video chat for Linux supports Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linux distributions, and RPM support will be coming soon," says Tristan Schmelcher, from Google.

Justin Uberti says that adding Linux support was really difficult. "This release required significant engineering to develop an all-new video rendering solution and an all-new PulseAudio-based audio handler, along with work to support 64-bit and countless webcam compatibility tests. We spent a lot of effort to make it fully feature-complete, with all the same goodies as the Windows and Mac versions, and we're happy to now support Google voice and video now on all major desktop platforms."

Oracle aims to destroy open source software industry

If proprietary companies like Oracle can buy up open source projects and then take back their open source status, how can an enterprise depend on open source software?
It is with the aim of creating this kind of FUD that Oracle has made its moves against Java and OpenSolaris. Most analysts now expect similar moves against mySQL and OpenOffice.
(To the right, a proprietary Dana, not the open source one. All will be explained.)
Why would Oracle destroy assets it just paid good money for?
Two reasons.

It didn’t really pay good money for them.
It pushes enterprise buyers away from all open source.

Oracle paid $7.4 billion for Sun. Even with recent drop-offs in revenue (which can be made up) the company should easily clear $2.5 billion in hardware sales this year. If you can buy a viable computer hardware business for three times sales you’re doing pretty well. Oracle got the software assets for free.

Man Who Claims Ownership Over Facebook Willing To Hire Zuckerberg To Run It

By now, I’m sure you’ll be aware that there’s a New York man named Paul Ceglia who claims he owns most of Facebook, which would turn him into an instant multi-billionaire if we were living in his Utopia and not planet Earth.
The wood-pellet entrepreneur filed suit against Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg last June, claiming 84% ownership of Facebook as well as additional monetary damages based on a web development project contract signed back in April 2003. The company calls the lawsuit ‘frivolous’ and without any merit whatsoever, so that story is to be continued in court.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg tracked down Ceglia for a fascinating face-to-face interview.

Microsoft Displeased At Not Going Japanese

Microsoft got some bad news this week when it found out that Yahoo Japan, unlike its U.S. parent company, will be partnering with Google, rather than Microsoft's search engine, Bing. The decision means that most of the Internet searches originating in Japan will use Google's search engine rather than Bing. Yahoo Japan is currently the leading search engine in Japan and handles over half of search activity.

Yahoo Japan CEO Masahiro Inoue said in a press conference that, "At the present time, we feel there are quite a few areas where Microsoft is not yet ready. Google is one step ahead in Japanese-language services."

In 2008, Yahoo proposed a partnership in the U.S. with Google, but dropped that effort after the Justice Department said it would block such a partnership due to antitrust concerns. Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith declared that the move would be even more anticompetitive than the U.S. partnership, saying that "Google will end up controlling all personal search information for all Japanese consumers and businesses."

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 27, 2010 – Intel Corporation today announced an important advance in the quest to use light beams to replace the use of electrons to carry data in and around computers. The company has developed a research prototype representing the world's first silicon-based optical data connection with integrated lasers. The link can move data over longer distances and many times faster than today's copper technology; up to 50 gigabits of data per second. This is the equivalent of an entire HD movie being transmitted each second.

Today computer components are connected to each other using copper cables or traces on circuit boards. Due to the signal degradation that comes with using metals such as copper to transmit data, these cables have a limited maximum length. This limits the design of computers, forcing processors, memory and other components to be placed just inches from each other. Today's research achievement is another step toward replacing these connections with extremely thin and light optical fibers that can transfer much more data over far longer distances, radically changing the way computers of the future are designed and altering the way the datacenter of tomorrow is architected.

But when he put the information for over a 100 million Facebook users into a 2.8 GB torrent stream on his website Skullsecurity.org, he didn't need to hack anything to get it - it was already publicly available on Facebook. All he did, he points out, was "compile public information into a nice format for statistical analysis."

Google under investigation by Met police

The UK's Metropolitan Police is to investigate Google over its capture of data from unsecured wi-fi networks, following a complaint from human rights group Privacy International.

The data, scooped up by Google's Street View cars, may put the firm in breach of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (Ripa).
It is likely that the police will interview Google staff in the UK.
It is one of many ongoing global investigations into Google.
Police say the initial investigation will take around 10 days, after which it will be passed to a specialist team if it is established that Google was in breach of Ripa or the Wireless Telegraphy Act.
The firm has admitted it collected data from unsecured wi-fi networks, although it said this was accidental.

Facebook Connect, the company’s tool for bringing your social graph to third-party websites, will soon be no more.
During a press conference today at Facebook’s F8 conference in San Francisco, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the Facebook Connect brand would be eliminated as part of the launch of Open Graph. Instead, the company is standardizing the interactions between Facebook and third parties via Facebook’s new Open Graph protocol and the OAuth 2.0 standard.
Earlier today, Zuckerberg announced the Open Graph protocol and API, which will allow developers to more easily access social graphs and integrate them with their web services. Yelp, Pandora and Microsoft are among its 30 plus launch partners.
Because of these changes in policy and philosophy, the “Facebook Connect” brand will cease to exist. It’s still not clear exactly how Facebook will replace Facebook Connect or if it will be called something else.

Google is designing an open source operating system called Google Chrome OS. This OS is exclusively designed for web applications. So, if you spends most of your time on web/internet then this is going to be the fast, simple and more secure computing experience for you. This OS was announced on July 7, 2009 and it is expected to be released during second half of 2010.
On January 25, 2010, Google posted notes, images and a video of a conceptual design showing how a Chrome OS user interface might look on a tablet PC with a 5-10 inch screen. Google Chrome OS is initially intended for secondary devices like netbooks, not a user’s primary PC, and will run on hardware incorporating an x86 or ARM-based processor. While Chrome OS will support hard disk drives, Google has requested that its hardware partners use solid-state drives due to their higher performance and reliability, as well as the lower capacity requirements inherent in an operating system that accesses applications and most user data on remote servers.

Starting with the 2.6.0 Linux kernel, you can dynamically scale processor frequencies through the CPUfreq subsystem. When processors operate at a lower clock speed, they consume proportionately less power and generate less heat. This dynamic scaling of the clock speed gives some control in throttling the system to consume less power when not operating at full capacity.
The CPUfreq structure makes use of governors and daemons for setting a static or dynamic power policy for the system. The dynamic governors, which I discuss later in this article, can switch between CPU frequencies based on CPU utilization to allow for power savings while not sacrificing performance. These governors also allow for some user tuning so you can customize and easily change the frequency scaling. In addition, the sched_mc_power_savings and sched_smt_power_savings settings make use of consolidating threads to save power.

TOKYO -- Almost everyone stood when the bride walked down the aisle in her white gown, but not the wedding conductor, because she was bolted to her chair.
The nuptials at this ceremony were led by "I-Fairy," a 4-foot tall seated robot with flashing eyes and plastic pigtails. Sunday's wedding was the first time a marriage had been led by a robot, according to manufacturer Kokoro Co.
"Please lift the bride's veil," the robot said in a tinny voice, waving its arms in the air as the newlyweds kissed in front of about 50 guests.
The wedding took place at a restaurant in Hibiya Park in central Tokyo, where the I-Fairy wore a wreath of flowers and directed a rooftop ceremony. Wires led out from beneath it to a black curtain a few feet away, where a man crouched and clicked commands into a computer.

Google Says It Mistakenly Collected Data on Web Usage

Google Inc. said an internal investigation has discovered that the roving vans the company uses to create its online mapping services were mistakenly collecting data about websites people were visiting over wireless networks.
The Internet giant said it would stop collecting Wi-Fi data from its StreetView vans, which workers drive to capture street images and to locate Wi-Fi networks. The company said it would dispose of the data it had accidentally collected.
Alan Eustace, senior vice president of engineering and research for Google, wrote in a blog post that the company uncovered the mistake while responding to a German data-protection agency's request for it to audit the Wi-Fi data, amid mounting concerns that Google's practices violated users' privacy.

A Russian internet host reportedly popular with gangs who stole online bank logins has been taken offline.

The PROXIEZ-NET service had previously advertised itself as immune to attempts to shut it down.
Miko Hypponen, chief research officer at F-Secure, said the development was "very nice".
He warned that those who used the host for malicious purposes will almost certainly "already be switching to a different service."

The sleep-deprived Oakland, California, resident had read that strong light -- whether it's beaming down from the sun or up from the screens of personal electronics -- can reset a person's internal sleep clock.
So, for one month, whenever the sun set, he turned off all the gadgets and lights in his house -- from the bulb hidden in his refrigerator to his laptop computer.
It worked. Instead of falling asleep at midnight, Moyer's head was hitting the pillow as early as 9 p.m. He felt so well-rested during the test, he said, that friends remarked on his unexpected morning perkiness.
"I had the experience, a number of times, just feeling kind of unreasonably happy for no reason. And it was the sleep," he said. "Sure, you can get by with six or seven hours, but sleeping eight or nine hours -- it's a different state of mind."

(CNN) -- Microsoft made a major leap skywards this week with the release of a cloud-based version of its Office software to businesses called Office Web Apps.

Microsoft's new product launch counters what many tech commentators thought the preeminent software company would never do.
"A lot of people say we will see pigs fly before we see Microsoft Office running in the cloud," said Tim O'Brien, Microsoft's senior director of platform strategy.

Microsoft Office 2010 takes aim at Google Docs

Microsoft has unleashed its latest weapon in its ongoing battle with Google.

The software giant has launched its flagship product Office 2010, aimed at businesses and home users.
The latest version of the software has a free online component - called Office Web Apps.
Analysts believe the web offering is a response to Google, which has been encroaching on Microsoft's core business with its free online tools.
Crucially, Microsoft will also offer its online office suite to all users of one of the world's most popular social networking sites, Facebook.
"There's no question - Microsoft is responding to Google's threat," said Whit Andrews, analyst at research firm Gartner.

Predictions name 9 September 2011 as the date on which the last of those tranches is released for net firms and others to use.
Everything connected to the net needs an "IP address" to ensure data reaches the right person or device.
Experts say that the net's entire existing address space will be exhausted about a year after that date.
A newer scheme is being rolled out but many firms and countries are being slow to switch, experts warn.

(CBS) At a warehouse in New Jersey, 6,000 used copy machines sit ready to be sold. CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian reports almost every one of them holds a secret.

Nearly every digital copier built since 2002 contains a hard drive - like the one on your personal computer - storing an image of every document copied, scanned, or emailed by the machine.

In the process, it's turned an office staple into a digital time-bomb packed with highly-personal or sensitive data.

If you're in the identity theft business it seems this would be a pot of gold.

"The type of information we see on these machines with the social security numbers, birth certificates, bank records, income tax forms," John Juntunen said, "that information would be very valuable."

Facebook fixes embarrassing security flaw

Facebook has rushed to fix a security flaw that allowed users to eavesdrop on the live chats of their friends and see their pending friend requests.

The exploit used the site's privacy features - intended to protect a user - to expose the personal information.

With just a few clicks users could spy on their friends' personal chat messages and see who had requested to join their network.

Facebook temporarily removed the chat facility while it fixed the flaw.

The exploit - originally reported by the blog TechCrunch - worked via an option in privacy settings that allows people to preview their profiles as it would appear to their friends.

Intel shows off Atom processors for smartphones

Intel has unveiled the chips it hopes will spearhead its push into smartphones.

The first devices to use the second generation of Atom processors should appear in the second half of 2010.

Intel said the processors were built to use as little power as possible to ensure they were fit for mobiles.

However, industry experts point out that Intel had tried and failed several times to get its chips used in handsets.

Googlemail to become Gmail in UK

British e-mail users with Google accounts are now able to change the end of their addresses from @googlemail.com to @gmail.com.

A five year trademark dispute meant that Google was not allowed to use the name Gmail in the UK.

In 2005 a company called Independent International Investment Research claimed it had used "Gmail" first.

Google claimed at the time that the settlement IIR asked for was "exorbitant" and dropped the name.

Within a year of launching the free e-mail service in the UK, Gmail became Google Mail.

While early adopters received a gmail.com address, all subsequent new accounts were given the suffix googlemail.com.

"Since 'gmail' is 50% fewer characters than 'googlemail' we estimate this name change will save approximately 60 million keystrokes a day," wrote software engineer Greg Bullock on Google's Gmail blog.

British users with Googlemail addresses will be asked whether they wish to change their address. It will not affect the settings or functionality of the accounts, Google said.

The firm is not releasing the details of the new settlement but states that the matter is "happily resolved".

We have also reviewed some techniques like selecting elements or removing nested elements. We will see now how to create a jQuery plugin to write all this functionality once and use it on any web project.

I have chosen the collapsible panel tutorial as a starting point to develop our plugin. We will trim down some functionality so it’s a bit more didactic, allowing us to focus on the plugin development.

Apple Sells One Million iPads

Apple on Monday announced that it had sold one million iPads as of Friday last week, a faster sales pace than the iPhone.

Apple also said users had downloaded more than 12 million applications from the iTunes app store and that 1.5 million books have been downloaded through Apple’s iBookstore. The iBookstore sells books only for the iPad, but Apple said it expected to sell books for the iPhone this year.

Apple also said there were now 5,000 iPad-specific apps available for the device. The top-selling applications in the App Store have remained relatively unchanged since the device went on sale last month. Apple’s own productivity suite including Pages, Numbers and Keynote, all analogous to Microsoft’s Office products, remain the top grossing apps along with the games Pinball, Real Racing HD and Scrabble.

User Experience Improvements

New Mail Account Setup Wizard
The new Mail Account Setup Wizard matches against a database of email settings from popular mail providers so that you will only need to provide your name, email, and password to set up new mail accounts.
Redesigned Mail Toolbar
The Mail Toolbar is redesigned to include the new Global Search bar. Buttons such as reply, forward, delete, junk are part of each email message. You can add those buttons back to the main toolbar by customizing the toolbar.
Tabbed Email Messages
Double-clicking or hitting enter on a mail message will now open that message in a New Tab window. Middle-clicking on messages or folders will open them in a Tab in the background. When quitting Thunderbird, visible tabs will be saved and will be restored when you open Thunderbird the next time. There is also a new Tab menu on the Tab toolbar to help you switch between Tabs.
Smart Folders
The folder pane offers a Smart Folders mode which combines special mailboxes, like Inbox, from multiple accounts. Smart Folders is now on by default.
New Message Summary View
Selecting multiple messages will give you a summary view of the emails you have selected.
Column Headings
The column headings that are displayed and the order in which they are displayed can now be set on a per-folder basis.
Message Archive
You can now file messages from your Inbox or other folders into the new Archive folder system.
Activity Manager
The Activity Manager records all the interactions between Thunderbird and your email provider in one place.

The new Add-ons Manager (Tools > Add-ons) can now be used to find, download, and install Thunderbird Add-ons which includes Extensions, Themes, and Plugins. Note that few Add-ons are compatible with this beta at the time of release, as Add-on developers need to upgrade them.
Improved Address Book
If someone is in your address book, it is indicated by a new star icon which you can click to edit contact details inline. If they are not in your address book, you can add them with one click of the icon. A new birthday field allows you to keep track of your friends' birthdays. You can also add a photo for contacts in your address book.
Improved Gmail Integration
Better recognition and integration of Gmail's special folders such as Sent and Trash including non-English versions of Gmail. Thunderbird also uses All Mail as the Archives folder.
For Windows Vista users, Thunderbird 3 is now integrated with Vista search results. On first start, Thunderbird will prompt to install its indexing system into Windows Vista and you can choose to see Thunderbird email and news messages in Windows search results.

For Mac users, Thunderbird 3 is now integrated with Spotlight, can import from Mail.app, read your OS X address book, and use Growl for new mail alerts.

Google warning on fake anti-virus software

Fake anti-virus software that infect PCs with malicious code are a growing threat, according to a study by Google.

Its analysis of 240m web pages over 13 months showed that fake anti-virus programs accounted for 15% of all malicious software.

Scammers trick people into downloading programs by convincing them that their PC is infected with a virus.

Hewlett-Packard buys struggling Palm for $1bn in cash

Palm, a pioneer in the smart phone business, is being bought by US computer giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $1bn (£657m) cash.

HP said Palm's webOS operating system would help it expand more aggressively in the fast-growing market for smart phones and connected mobile devices.

When Palm's debt is included, the deal values the company at $1.2bn.

HP, paying $5.70 for each Palm share, said it hoped to complete the deal by the end of July.

A jury in Tennessee has convicted a former student of hacking the e-mail account of Sarah Palin.

David Kernell, 22, was found guilty of obstructing justice and unauthorised access to a computer.

The son of a Democratic lawmaker, he faces up to 20 years in prison for the first charge and one year for the charge of hacking.

He broke into Mrs Palin's e-mail account during her 2008 Republican campaign for the US vice-presidency.

Kernell was cleared of a charge of wire fraud.

they will have reduced the money to manageable levels;
they cant afford chicken very day but their diet doesnt lack eggs.
they feed on CHICKEN PRODUCTS.
at end of sem,
they are so broke that they feed on ugali, sukuma, githeri;
i.e they FEED LIKE A CHICKEN.
